Reading Reaction #3

Rhetorical Analysis - Chapter 6
This chapter was a bit challenging for me. It contained a lot of new information, and some of it was hard to understand. However, I also found the chapter interesting, especially the part about the examining arguments based on emotion. It made me question how many ads I see everyday and what impact they have on me. Even if I know that it’s “just” an ad I still believe it has an impact on how I view things.

What made me confused was that I don’t understand how I should figure out what “style” the writer is using. “Readers naturally judge the credibility of arguments in part by how stylishly the case is made–even when they don’t know exactly what style is (p. 105).” That’s how I’m feeling. I can judge a writers work, but how would I know if those judgments are right?

I was very confused while reading this chapter and for some reason I just couldn’t understand it until I got to the guide page. Everything started to get more understandable when I read the guide to write a rhetorical analysis, but I’m still confused…

Finding Evidence - Chapter 17
This chapter provides a lot of good information. The information was pretty basic and easy to understand. I have always used the “regular” Internet to search for everything, but since I started at SBCC I have used the library database and catalog for my research papers. During my years at CC I learned how to navigate their database. In the beginning it was kind of hard and I wish I had access to this chapter earlier. However, I never learned about the LCSH, which would have been helpful and it would have saved me a lot of time.

Something I need to work on is to draw upon personal experience. Even if it’s not the best evidence to use, it something I need to be better at. I’m bad at using personal experience in situations when it could be good information/evidence to use.

Email Request Final Draft

Research for an Educational Class: Interview Request

Dear Director Lynn Houston,

My name is Angelica Cramér and I am a student at Antioch University Santa Barbara with a concentration in Marketing. My interest in marketing has existed for as long as I can remember, and it is something I really want to work with in the future. I am reaching out to you because I would like to interview someone who works with marketing. I heard about you and your work through Kristianne Clifford, and it would be pleasure to work with you.

The research assignment I am doing is for my Academic Writing class. The project requires me to have an interview, and I would also need 3-5 writing artifacts to study. I am writing this email because I am wondering if you would be able to share some of your written materials and if you would have time to meet up sometime between the 6-11th of August?

Thank you for your time, I look forward to hear back from you.

Kind Regards,
Angelica Cramér

Reading Reaction #2

Understanding Rhetoric Issue 3
“Writing means always changing–changing to meet the needs of different audiences (p. 117)”
Unfortunately I haven’t explored my writing much, most of the writing that I do is in school or sending text messages. I definitively use different styles depending on who I text, I most certain don’t use the same langue or style when I write to my mom and dad as I use when I text my friends. It also made me realize that I don’t use exactly the same style when I text my American friends compared to Swedish.

What I found interesting is that you can change your identity without changing your personality. I would say that I do it all the time. I write in more styles than I thought and I definitively dress in a lot of different styles. For example, I don’t wear the same cloths to the gym as I would wear to a job interview.

Crafting Brief Messages - Chapter 7
I’m a marketing major so I found chapter 7 to be very interesting and providing. I liked how they went over all the electronic medias benefits and disadvantage. The checklist boxes was good and made it simple to understand.

What I found to be the most interesting is that e-mail is being replaced with new electronic media tools that provides better support. I have heard it before but haven’t really understood how many different ways you can communicate as a business today. I also didn’t know that companies are using instant messaging to communicate within the company.

I learned a lot for this chapter, and looking forward to apply the information and be able to create effective messages.

Writing Routine and Positive Messages - Chapter 8
Chapter 8 covered the three-steps writing process of routine and positive messages. I’m not use to write professionally and when I send e-mails I have a tendency rush through it. This chapter helped me to realize how important it’s to write professional, establish my credibility, and analyze the audience.

The readings for this week really covered the importance of keeping a professional tone. It doesn’t matter what kind of media your using, it’s important to address the audience with the right performance.

Reading Reaction #1

Understanding Rhetoric
I really enjoyed reading the comic style. It felt very relaxed and was fun reading. I liked how they showed examples with both text and pictures. It brings up many different ways that we can use to communicate with each other, which I think is very interesting. “Rhetoric is a way of thinking about how we talk that takes into consideration the entire situation in which that talk take place.” I don’t think I have thought about it that way before, when I hear the word rhetoric I immediately start thinking about ethos, pathos, and logos. When I think about those words I start thinking about public speaking, I have never thought about that we’re using it both when we speak and write.

Everything is an argument
I never thought there was so many different ways to make arguments. When I think about the term argument I think that I’m going to try to convince someone. After reading this text I have realized that I can use argument to persuade, to inform, to explore, to make decisions, and to meditate or pray. I also realized that we use ethos, logos, and pathos when we make different kind of arguments. “Thinking rhetorically means keeping all these elements (Writers speakers, text message, context media, and readers, viewers, and listeners) in mind, and doing so might even lead you to challenge the title of this text: is everything an argument?” As mention earlier I symbolize the term argument with convincing someone. After reading the text I’m not sure that everything is an argument, but I’m sure that we don’t only use arguments to convince people.

About me Blurb!

Hi,

So I guess its time for me to tell you all little about myself. My name is Susanne but I go by Angelica, I know it might be a little confusing but unfortunately I can’t change it. I’m 22 years old and from Sweden. When I moved to Santa Barbara two years ago I had never been in California before, but I had been to Florida a couple of times. I knew that I liked Florida but I wanted to try something new. I have always loved challenges and moving to California by myself was a great challenge. I have met so many amazing people. Moving to Santa Barbara is the best choice I have ever made. When I first moved here I only thought that I would be at SBCC for a year, but I changed my mind and decided to do my whole education here in SB. At Antioch I’m working on my B.A. in Marketing.

My first winter break at SBCC I went home to Sweden and I realized that I do not like to cold weather at all. Therefore Santa Barbara is perfect for me, it’s warm and close to the beach. I love spending time with my friends and family. I also like to do a lot of activities like yoga, hiking, going to the gym, reading, and hanging out at the beach. One thing I can’t believe I haven’t tried yet is paddle boarding it seems like so much fun. Hopefully I will find the time to do it this semester. My biggest interest is traveling, I love being in different countries experience different cultures. Travel around the world have always been a dream for me, and one day I hope that dream comes true.

Hmm, I don’t know what else to tell about me! I look forward to get to know you all and I’m sure we’re going to get an awesome summer quarter together. I might seem shy in the classroom but outside the classroom I love to talk.

See you in class :)
